(VIDEO)FULL STORY OF PLOT TO BOMB SHUL IN RIVERDALE NEW YORK
Accused Terrorists In (SOURCE FOX NEWS)
Court
Terror Plot Foiled
NEW YORK - Four men are in court this afternoon to face charges of plotting to bomb Jewish sites and shoot down military planes were arrested after planting what they thought were explosive
devices near a synagogue and community center, authorities say.
Officials told The Associated Press the arrests came after a nearly yearlong undercover operation that began in Newburgh, N.Y., about 70 miles north of New York City.
James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen, all of Newburgh, were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the United States and conspiracy to
acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles, the U.S. attorney's office said.
Three of the defendants are U.S. citizens and one is of Haitian descent, officials said.
The men had planned to detonate a car with plastic explosives outside a temple in the Bronx neighborhood of Riverdale and to shoot military planes at the New York Air National Guard base at
Stewart Airport in Newburgh with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles, authorities said.
The defendants planned to "destroy a synagogue and a Jewish community center with C-4 plastic explosives," Acting U.S. Attorney Lev L. Dassin said.
>U.S. ATTORNEY'S PRESS RELEASE (PDF)
The religious targets were the Riverdale Temple, founded in 1947, and the Riverdale Jewish Center, authorities said.
"This latest attempt to attack our freedoms shows that the homeland security threats against New York City are sadly all too real and underscores why we must remain vigilant in our efforts to
prevent terrorism," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. The mayor is expected to appear at Riverdale Jewish Center morning services with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
The defendants, in their efforts to acquire weapons, dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, authorities said. The FBI and other agencies monitored the men and provided an inactive missile and inert C-4 to the informant for the defendants, a federal complaint said.
In June 2008, the informant met Cromitie in Newburgh and Cromitie complained that his parents had lived in Afghanistan and he was upset about the war there and that many Muslim people were
being killed in Afghanistan and Pakistan by U.S. military forces, officials said.
Cromitie also expressed an interest in doing "something to America," they said in the complaint.
In October 2008, the informant began meeting with the defendants at a Newburgh house equipped with concealed video and audio equipment, the complaint said.
Beginning in April 2009, the four men selected the synagogue and the community center they intended to hit, it said. They also conducted surveillance of military planes at the Air National Guard
Base, it said.
The suspects were arrested Wednesday night, shortly after planting a mock explosive device in the trunk of a car outside the Riverdale Temple and two mock bombs in the backseat of a car
outside the Jewish Center, authorities said.
Rep. Peter King, the senior Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, was briefed on the case following the arrests.
"This was a long, well-planned investigation, and it shows how real the threat is from homegrown terrorists," said King, of New York.
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said if there can be any good news out of this case it's that "the group was relatively unsophisticated, penetrated early and not connected to any outside group."
"The shocking plan to blow up a Jewish house of prayer with what the jihadist terrorists thought were C-4 explosives is dramatic proof that the dangers from such fanaticism have not passed and that American Jews must maintain their vigilance," said a statement released by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights group.
The defendants were jailed Wednesday night and couldn't be contacted for comment. The FBI didn't immediately return a telephone message seeking information on whether the men had
lawyers.

North Korea Has Become A Fully Fledged Nuclear Power With The Capacity To Wipe Out Entire Cities In Japan & South Korea
The world’s intelligence agencies and defense experts are quietly acknowledging that North Korea has become a fully fledged nuclear power with the capacity to wipe out entire cities in Japan and South Korea, the Times of London reported.
The new reality has emerged in off-hand remarks and in single sentences buried in lengthy reports. Increasing numbers of authoritative experts — from the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the U.S. Defense Secretary — are admitting that North Korea has miniaturized nuclear warheads to the extent that they can be launched on medium-range missiles, according to intelligence briefings.
This puts it ahead of Iran in the race for nuclear attack capability and seriously alters the balance of power between North Korea’s large but poorly equipped military and the South Korean and U.S. forces ranged against it. “North Korea has nuclear weapons, which is a matter of fact,” the head of the IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, said this week. “I don’t like to accept any country as a nuclear weapon state we have to face reality.”
North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test in 2006 but until recently foreign governments believed that such nuclear devices were useless as weapons because they were too unwieldy to be mounted on a missile.
With 13,000 artillery pieces buried close to the border between the two Koreas, and chemical and biological warheads, it was always understood that the North could inflict significant conventional damage on Seoul, the South Korean capital. Military planners had calculated, however, that it could not strike outside the peninsula.
Now North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Il, has the potential to kill millions in Japan as well as the South, and to lay waste U.S. bases and airfields in both countries. It will force military strategists to rethink plans for war in Korea and significantly increase the potential costs of any intervention in a future Korean war. The shift from acknowledging North Korea’s nuclear weapons development program to recognizing it as a fully fledged nuclear power is highly controversial. South Korea, in particular, resists the reclassification because it could give the North greater leverage in negotiations.

PHILADELPHIA — Two fire trucks responding to a call collided at a downtown intersection Thursday, injuring nine firefighters, one seriously.
Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said none of the injuries appeared life-threatening after the crash, which involved a ladder truck and a fire engine in a residential neighborhood.
The most seriously injured firefighter, a lieutenant on the ladder truck, was knocked unconscious and had to be cut from the wreckage.
Ayers said he spoke at a hospital with the injured lieutenant, whose first question was, "How's my guys?"
The ladder truck and the fire engine had been speeding along perpendicular streets before they slammed into each other. The ladder truck then spun off and smashed into a utility pole, caving in one of its sides, while the fire engine clattered into the back of a parked car.
No other injuries were reported, but a woman inside a flower shop nearly struck by the ladder truck was taken to a hospital for observation because she was shaken up, Ayers said.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Four other fire trucks made it to the two-story home where the fire was reported and extinguished the flames.

Jordan Valley Shooting Leaving 2 Dead - Fatah Says Responsible
Two Israeli policemen were killed Sunday evening near Moshav Massua in the Jordan Valley region near the Gilboa area. According to Ma'ariv-NRG, the two are policemen whose squad car overturned after it was fired at. Both had reportedly been shot in the head.
Channel 1 says that the car was ambushed from very close range and carried an initial report that Fatah-Tanzim, which is headed by Mahmoud Abbas, had taken responsibility for the attack. Another report said that an unknown group named the "Imad Mughnieh Squads" took responsibility for the murders which it said were committed "in response to the crimes of occupation against the Palestinian people."
Rescue forces have reached the scene. These include police cars, ambulances, military medical forces. ZAKA volunteers have also ben summoned to the spot.
Residents of the area were instructed to remain in their homes, because the shooters are still at large. Investigators have still not ruled out the possibility of a criminal motivation for the attack, although this seems unlikely.
There has been speculation that the attack was timed to coincide with the efforts to reach a deal with Hamas for the release of hundreds of terrorists in return for abducted soldier Gilad Shalit.

Senate Backs Amendment to Prevent 'Fairness Doctrine' Revival
The South Carolina senator attached his amendment, called the Broadcaster Freedom Act, to a bill to give the District of Columbia a voting representative in the House.
The Senate approved an amendment Thursday that would outlaw the so-called "Fairness Doctrine," an off-the-books policy that once required broadcasters to air opposing viewpoints on controversial issues.
Republican Sen. Jim DeMint's amendment passed by a wide margin of 87-to-11. The South Carolina senator had attached his proposal, called the Broadcaster Freedom Act, to a bill to give the District of Columbia a voting representative in the House.
It's unclear whether the amendment will survive as Congress debates the voting rights bill. But the measure served to effectively put the Senate on record as opposing a revival of the Fairness Doctrine.
However, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin also won approval for an alternate amendment that would order the Federal Communications Commission to encourage radio ownership "diversity."
A DeMint aide said Durbin's measure will "impose the Fairness Doctrine through the back door by trying to break up radio ownership."
The aide called the Durbin proposal "an attempt to break up companies like Clear Channel and hurt their syndications and therefore putting many local radio stations out of business that depend on those syndicated shows for revenue."
The measure passed by a vote of 57-to-41.
The media control doctrine is a policy created decades ago but abolished in the late 1980s that required broadcasters to provide opposing views on controversial issues of public importance.
Though President Obama remains opposed to any effort to renew it and the Federal Communications Commission claims it is not in any talks to revive the policy, a few Democrats have voiced strong support for the media control policy in recent weeks. Republicans like DeMint in turn pushed legislation to forestall any move to bring back the doctrine.
"We need to make it a law that the FCC or this Congress cannot implement any aspect of the Fairness Doctrine," DeMint said.

Estimated Budget Totals for 2008-2010 Show Government Public Debt Rise 63 Percent
White House Office of Management and Budget presents totals for President Obama's 2010 spending plan.
If passed, President Obama's spending and tax blueprint for 2010 will mean the U.S. government's debt will increase 63 percent in two years.
The publicly held debt -- money that is owed by the government to foreign and domestic creditors -- was 40.8 percent of gross domestic product in 2008. That increased to 58.7 percent based on projections for the fiscal year that began on Oct. 1, and will rise again to 64.6 percent in 2010 under Obama's proposed budget.
Gross domestic product is a dollar value of all the finished goods and services produced by the nation. The United States' GDP was $14.22 trillion in 2008, of which $5.8 trillion was debt held by the public. In 2009, GDP is projected to increase to $14.4 trillion but the publicly held debt will rise to $8.3 trillion. According to Obama's budget plan, the economy will reach $14.7 trillion. Public debt will rise to $9.5 trillion.

Plane Crashed Near Buffalo New York
The cause of the disaster was under investigation, but other pilots were overheard around the same time complaining of ice building up on their wings — a hazard that has caused major crashes in the past.
The twin turboprop aircraft — Continental Connection Flight 3407 from Newark, N.J. — was coming in for a landing when it went down in light snow and fog around 10:20 p.m. Thursday about five miles short of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
Witnesses heard the plane sputtering before it plunged squarely through the roof of the house, its tail section visible through flames shooting at least 50 feet high.
"The whole sky was lit up orange," said Bob Dworak, who lives less than a mile away. "All the sudden, there was a big bang, and the house shook."
Two others in the house escaped with minor injuries. The plane was carrying a four-member crew and an off-duty pilot. Among the 44 passengers killed was a woman whose husband died in the World Trade Center attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Federal investigators found the black box recorders in the plane's tail that could shed light on what went wrong, but they said the smoldering debris was still too hot to remove bodies. The recorders were on their way to Washington for examination.
No mayday call came from the pilot before the crash, according to a recording of air traffic control's radio messages captured by the Web site LiveATC.net. Neither the controller nor the pilot showed concern that anything was out of the ordinary as the airplane was asked to fly at 2,300 feet.
A minute later, the controller tried to contact the plane but heard no response. After a pause, he tried to contact the plane again.
Eventually he told an unidentified listener to contact authorities on the ground in the Clarence area.
Erie County Emergency Coordinator David Bissonette said it appeared the plane "dove directly on top of the house."
"It was a direct hit," Bissonette said. "It's remarkable that it only took one house. As devastating as that is, it could have wiped out the entire neighborhood."
The 74-seat Q400 Bombardier aircraft, also known as the Dash 8, in Thursday's disaster was operated by Colgan Air, based in Manassas, Va. Colgan's parent company, Pinnacle Airlines of Memphis, Tenn., said the plane was new and had a clean safety record.
The nearly vertical drop of the plane suggests a sudden loss of control, said William Voss, a former official of the Federal Aviation Administration and current president of the Flight Safety Foundation, a nonprofit advocacy group.
Voss suggested that icing or a mechanical failure, such as wing flaps deploying asymmetrically or the two engines putting out different thrust, might have caused the crash, he said.
After the crash, at least two pilots were heard on air traffic control messages saying they had been picking up ice on their wings. "We've been getting ice since 20 miles south of the airport," one said.
Ice on the wings of a plane can alter aerodynamics and interfere with lift and handling. The danger is well known among pilots.
In general, smaller planes like the Dash 8, which uses a system of pneumatic de-icing boots, are more susceptible to icing problems than larger commuter planes that use a system to warm the wings. The boots, a rubber membrane stretched over the surface, are filled with compressed air to crack any ice that builds up.
A similar turboprop jet crash 15 years ago in Indiana was caused by icing, and after that the NTSB issued icing recommendations to more aggressively use the plane's system of pneumatic de-icing boots. But the FAA hasn't adopted it. It remains part of the NTSB's most-wanted safety improvements list.
The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team of investigators to Buffalo. The Department of Homeland Security said there was no indication of terrorism.
While residents of the neighborhood were used to planes rumbling overhead, witnesses said it sounded louder than usual, sputtered and made odd noises.
David Luce said he and his wife were working on their computers when they heard the plane come in low. "It didn't sound normal," he said. "We heard it for a few seconds, then it stopped, then a couple of seconds later was this tremendous explosion."
Dworak drove to the site, and "all we were seeing was 50- to 100-foot flames and a pile of rubble on the ground. It looked like the house just got destroyed the instant it got hit."
One person in the home was killed, and two others inside, Karen Wielinski, 57, and her 22-year-old daughter, Jill, escaped with minor injuries.
The plane was carrying 5,000 pounds of fuel and apparently exploded on impact, Erie County Executive Chris Collins said.
It was the first fatal crash of a commercial airliner in the United States since Aug. 27, 2006, when 49 people were killed after a Comair jetliner mistakenly took off from a Lexington, Ky., runway that was too short.
About 30 relatives and others who arrived at the Buffalo airport overnight were escorted into a private area and then taken by bus to a senior citizens center in the neighboring town of Cheektowaga, where counselors and representatives from Continental waited to help.
The 9/11 widow on board was identified as Beverly Eckert. She was heading to Buffalo for a celebration of what would have been her husband's 58th birthday, said Mary Fetchet, a 9/11 family activist.
Clarence is a growing eastern suburb of Buffalo, largely residential but with rural stretches. The crash site is on a street of older, single-family homes about 20 to 25 feet apart that back up to a wooded area.
The crash came less than a month after a US Airways pilot guided his crippled plane to a landing in the Hudson River in New York City, saving the lives of all 155 people aboard. Birds had apparently disabled both its engines.
On Dec. 20, a Continental Airlines plane veered off a runway and slid into a snowy field at the Denver airport, injuring 38 people.

Contributing to this report were Associated Press writers Carolyn Thompson in Buffalo, Linda Franklin in Dallas, Daniel Yee in Atlanta, Ron Powers in Washington, and Cristian Salazar and Jennifer Peltz in New York.

Continental said relatives and friends of those on Flight 3407 who want to give or receive information about those on board can call a special family assistance number, 1-800-621-3263.

Obama Discusses his Muslim Background in Al Arabiya Interview
(IsraelNN.com) President Barack Obama chose the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya Arabic satellite TV network for his first formal television interview as president. He cited his Muslim background and Muslim relatives and said that one of his main tasks was to communicate to Muslims "that the Americans are not your enemy."
Obama said the U.S. had made mistakes in the past but expressed hope "that the same respect and partnership that America had with the Muslim world as recently as 20 or 30 years ago, there's no reason why we can't restore that."
He condemned Iran's threats against Israel, its pursuit of nuclear weapons and support of terrorist organizations, but he added, "It is important for us to be willing to talk to Iran, to express very clearly where our differences are, but where there are potential avenues for progress."
Obama called for a new partnership with the Muslim world "based on mutual respect and mutual interest." He talked about growing up in Indonesia, the Muslim world's most populous nation, and noted that he has Muslim relatives.
Hamas likes Mitchell
In a surprising statement, Hamas group softened their stance against Obama Tuesday.
"In the last couple of days there have been a lot of statements [from Obama], some of them very positive, and choosing this George Mitchell as an envoy," said Ahmed Youssef, a senior Hamas official interviewed on the Al-Jazeera news network. "I think there are some positive things we have to count." Mitchell arrived in Egypt on Tuesday for a visit that will also include Israel, the PA, Jordan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
The interview centered on Israel and the PA, but Obama did not say what his approach to the dispute would be. He said he felt it was important to "get engaged right away" in the Middle East and had directed Mitchell to talk to "all the major parties involved."
The president reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel as an ally and to its right to defend itself. He added: "I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people," he said, and called for “a Palestinian state” that is contiguous with internal freedom of movement and can trade with neighboring countries.
Clinton supports Israel
The United States supports "Israel's right to self-defense," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a Washington news conference Tuesday.
"The rocket barrages which are getting closer and closer to populated areas [in Israel] cannot go unanswered," she said in her first news conference at the State Department.

President Obama's Weekly Address
Pope Reinstates Holocaust-Denying Bishop
Williamson has reportedly made several statements denying the full extent of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews, as the facts are accepted by mainstream historians and still-living victims. The Pontiff ignored Jewish leaders in rehabilitating Williams, who warned that the move would seriously harm Catholic-Jewish relations and create new reasons for anti-Semitism.
Commenting on Swedish television in Germany in November, and played back on Wednesday, Williams said the Nazis did not use gas chambers...
"I believe that the historical evidence ... is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler. Between 200,000-300,000 perished in Nazi concentration camps, but not one of them by gassing in a gas chamber."
Rome's chief rabbi said Williamson's rehabilitation would open "a deep wound." And the umbrella group of French Jewish organizations, CRIF,called him
"A despicable liar whose only goal is to revive the centuries-old hate against Jews.".
Vatican officials declined Friday to comment on his remarks.
Williamson's remarks could get him into legal trouble in Germany. State prosecutors in Regensburg have opened a preliminary investigation about whether he broke German laws against Holocaust denial.

Paterson Picks Rep. Gillibrand for Clinton's Seat
The appointment requires no further confirmation. Clinton was recently named U.S. secretary of state.
The announcement comes one day after Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy, abruptly withdrew from consideration. :President Barack Obama called Gillibrand to congratulate her and said in a statement that she has "the integrity, character and dedication to public service to help us achieve our greatest goals."
The 42-year-old Gillibrand has been one of the top contenders in Paterson's selection process, along with Kennedy and state Attorney
General Andrew Cuomo. The upstate congresswoman had served as
Cuomo's special counsel when he was housing secretary under President Clinton.
Gillibrand represents New York's 20th congressional district in eastern New York.
Paterson's appointment lasts until 2010, when a special election will be held to fill the final two years of Clinton's term.
Suspected US missile strikes kill 18 in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- Two suspected U.S missile attacks killed 18 people Friday in Pakistan just east of the Afghan border, security officials said, the first such strikes since the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
At least five victims were identified as foreign militants, an intelligence officer said.
The strikes, which hit two districts of the lawless region where al-Qaida militants are known to hide out, are the latest in a barrage of more than 30 since the middle of last year.
Pakistan's pro-U.S. leaders had expressed hope Obama would halt the attacks, which have reportedly killed several top al-Qaida operatives but triggered anger at the government by nationalist and Muslim critics.
Islamabad routinely protests the strikes in the northwest as a violation of the country's sovereignty, but most observers speculate that it has an unwritten agreement allowing them to take place, noting it would be highly damaging to be seen as colluding with Washington in attacks on its people.
The missiles are normally fired from spy planes believed to be launched from across the border in Afghanistan.
The first attack Friday took place in the village of Zharki in North Waziristan, when a single drone fired three missiles in the space of 10 minutes, the security officials said.
The missiles destroyed two buildings, killing 10 people, at least five of whom were foreign militants, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Hours later, a second missile struck a house in South Waziristan, killing eight people, the officials said, giving no more details.
The United States rarely acknowledges firing the missiles, but there is little doubt it is responsible.
Washington is pressing Pakistan to crack down on militants in the border, which it blames for rising attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan as well as violence within Pakistan.
Earlier Friday, a suicide attack and a roadside bomb killed two soldiers and three civilians in the Swat Valley, a one-time tourist destination close to the border region, officials said.
Pakistan has launched military offensives in parts of the northwest, but insurgents are making inroads Swat, blowing up schools, killing police and soldiers, and calling for the imposition of a hard-line interpretation of Islamic law.
Militancy in Swat is seen as especially dangerous for Pakistan because the valley lies away from the areas where al-Qaida and the Taliban have traditionally operated.
In an indication of the difficulties facing the government, more than 1,000 hard-liners demonstrated in the capital, saying there would only be peace in Swat and other frontier regions if the government severs its ties with the United States.
"The lawlessness cannot end until the end of the pro-America policy," one speaker told the crowd gathered close to the Parliament building in Islamabad.

Fire at Mt. Sinai Hospital 7:45 Pm

Caroline Kennedy Ends Senate Bid-Gov. David Paterson has said he is considering AG Andrew Cuomo for seat
Earlier this week, Gov. David Paterson acknowledged he was considering Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for appointment to the seat. The Times cited as its source a person told of her decision.
On Wednesday, the Times reported that she called Paterson to express concerns about the health of her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was hospitalized Tuesday after a seizure during the inaugural luncheon. She said his health concerns were her top priority. A statement from Kennedy could come as early as Wednesday evening, the Times reported.
Recent polls showed New Yorkers narrowly favor Cuomo over Kennedy, the 51-year-old daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy. Cuomo is the son of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. Kennedy's emergence as a contender generated both buzz and controversy. She comes from a Democratic dynasty but has never held public office, and some Republicans and Democrats have criticized her lack of experience.
Paterson told CBS News at an interview during the inauguration of President Barack Obama that Cuomo "has outstanding qualities and is someone I am considering."
He also noted that he was considering lesser known candidates as well. Obama nominated Clinton to be his secretary of state, and she was confirmed Wednesday.
Paterson has been criticized by good-government groups for a secretive selection process that he defends as essential to making the best choice without regard to traditional campaigning. Paterson and Cuomo were also criticized for refusing to say whether Cuomo was interested in the Senate seat.
Paterson has said their conversations were confidential under attorney-client privilege, a legal view questioned by experts in recent interviews with The Associated Press. Cuomo said he would allow only Paterson to divulge those discussions because it was the governor's process.
Kennedy was an early front-runner when she took a short public tour upstate and sat for press interviews in December. But she faltered while answering some questions and was mocked nationwide for her frequent use of "you know" and "um."
"I was very impressed by her in our conversation. I found her to be very hardworking, very forthright. And she had some faux pas with the media when she first started, as have a number of people who have gone on to be outstanding in their service," Paterson said. "So I am weighing her ability and her acumen and what she might be able to do in New York, more than that, and also, in comparison with some rather stiff competition in New York."

Before he administered an oath to senior White House staffers and their deputies today, the vice president had a little fun at the expense of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The normally eloquent, quite brilliant John Roberts slightly botched the oath of office when administering it to President Obama yesterday, misplacing the word "faithfully" and causing some minor awkwardness on stage.
Today, after Mr. Obama praised his staffers as "an extraordinary collection of talent" who "inspire great confidence in me," the president asked his Number 2 if he wanted to administer the oath.
"For the senior staff," Mr. Obama said.
"For the senior staff?" Biden repeated. "Alright."
Biden tried to get a copy of the oath to read to the senior staffers.
"My memory is not as good as Justice Roberts," Biden explained, prompting some laughter and groans from the audience.
Senate Confirms Clinton as Next Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next secretary of state Wednesday, after questions about her husband's foundation sidetracked her nomination for a day.
A number of senators said before the vote that Clinton, who traveled and met with foreign dignitaries around the world during her time as first lady, is uniquely qualified for the job.
They said foreign policy challenges such as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the conflict in the Gaza Strip make her installation imperative for President Obama's administration.
"As a country and as a world, we need Hillary Clinton as secretary of state," Clinton's New York colleague, Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, said on the floor before the vote.
The Senate voted 94-2, with Sen. David Vitter, R-La., and Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., voting against.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. said the country needs an advocate on the world stage, and, "There's no better advocate than Hillary Clinton."
Obama press secretary Robert Gibbs said Clinton, as the new secretary of state, would attend the White House meeting on Iraq Wednesday afternoon.
Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee which held Clinton's hearing, showed some disappointment that the Senate did not act on her nomination on Tuesday, the day Obama was sworn into office. Six other Cabinet appointees were confirmed on Inauguration Day.
"We were prepared to vote yesterday," Kerry said. "It's a day overdue."
Clinton's confirmation was delayed until Wednesday over the objections from one senator, Texas Republican John Cornyn. He had concerns about foreign donations made to former President Bill Clinton's foundation.
But Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said on the floor that he had talked to Cornyn and that Cornyn had no objections to a vote Wednesday. Cornyn spoke with Clinton Tuesday at the Capitol and said the former first lady agreed to more regular disclosure of her husband's foundation donations, provided the requirement does not only apply to the Clintons.
Before the vote, however, DeMint voiced further concern about foreign donations to Bill Clinton's foundation. DeMint said he wished Clinton well in her new post and defended her qualifications, but said he would vote against her confirmation.
He said he was also concerned about Clinton's pro-abortion beliefs and warned against using foreign assistance dollars to fund abortion.

FBI Investigating At Scene Of N.J. Turnpike Closure
The driver was later stopped by state police. The driver was taken into custody and SkyFox over the scene showed the automobile was being searched.
State police said the FBI is currently investigating.
Traffic was backed up as a result of the closure between the Delaware Memorial Bridge (Interchange 1) and Route 73 in Mount Laurel (Interchange 4).
Motorists are being advised on the turnpike's Web site to seek an alternate route. The suggested route is Interstate 295.

Around 8:45 p.m., a local FBI spokesman said agents in Boston had received a tip about a person headed to Washington, D.C., and, based on that tip, the Joint Terrorism Task Force issued a bulletin for a vehicle headed south.
But investigation showed that information provided to the FBI by a person with "mental issues," the bureau spokesman said, and the man stopped by state police was found to have nothing suspicious.
The FBI has since given the all clear, and man in custody -- who officials said was, in fact, headed to Washington for job-related reasons -- was no longer being detained.
